At the start of this year, I set myself a goal:
50 Pilates classes by end of financial year.
I’ve never (ever in my life) managed to stick to a health goal before. But I’m turning 40 this year and I decided it was going to be different.
And for once, I was actually on track.
I’d done 46 classes. I was so close.
And then I got benched.
A health hiccup (nothing major, in fact something frustratingly small) meant I was told, quite suddenly and unexpectedly, that I wasn’t allowed to do Pilates for two weeks.
So that’s my goal, gone.
I was devastated. This goal wasn’t just about ticking a box.
It was about proving something to myself.
That I could stick to a habit.
That I could be “that person.”
And now, with the finish line in sight, I couldn’t cross it. Not because I gave up. Not because I got lazy. But because I wasn’t allowed to finish what I started.
Old me would’ve cracked out the family sized bar of chocolate, and embraced the (very legitimate) excuse. I would’ve told myself “Oh well, I’m just not that person I guess”.
But here’s what I have decided to do instead:
I left the Pilates sessions blocked in my diary.
I still put on my gym clothes.
And I walked.
Because while I can’t complete the challenge, I can still protect the habit.
I can still show up.
I can still choose to move.
The truth is: life will throw us curveballs.
Whether it’s your health, your schedule, your motivation, or your business.
Something will break the plan.
And you’ll be faced with a choice:
Do I give up? Or do I adapt?
In that moment, what matters most isn’t the perfect streak or the shiny milestone.
It’s the identity you’re building.
Are you the kind of person who bounces back?
The person who finds a way, even when it’s inconvenient?
Who doesn’t wait for the stars to align to do what matters?
That’s what I’ve realised:
Resilience is a skill.
Habits are a decision.
And identity is shaped by what you do next.
EOFY isn’t just a deadline. It’s an opportunity.
We treat January 1 like the holy grail of fresh starts—but I think July 1 deserves just as much energy.
Right now, you’ve got two choices.
You can carry old stories, old excuses, old habits into the new financial year.
Or you can draw a line in the sand.
You can choose to back yourself.
You can choose to build momentum—even if you’re not “ready.”
You can choose to do the things you know your business needs.
Not next month. Not when the timing’s better.
Now.
This isn’t about Pilates.
It’s about showing up.
It’s about becoming the kind of person who does hard things.
You’re more capable than you give yourself credit for.
And you don’t have to wait for January to prove it.
